The biggest hydraulic hammer utilized at New Sakonnet River bridge, USA

The replacement of the Sakonnet River Bridge, which carries nearly 40,000 cars per day and provides a critical transportation system link between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, is necessary to meet current highway design standards for shoulder width and structural capacity. A, 3,160-ft-long, 4-lane bridge will be built along an alignment located immediately south of the existing bridge, which will remain in operation during construction.

Standing where the new bridge will soar overhead, State officer Carcieri and other officials marked a milestone in the long process to replace the 53-year-old bridge. Construction work under way and is projected to open to Route 24 traffic in spring 2012.

The weight restriction also kept fire trucks in Portsmouth and Tiverton from helping in emergencies in each other’s communities.
It is the most expensive bridge project in state history and is projected to create up to 140 construction jobs and 330 indirect jobs, according to RIDOT. “We need the jobs,” Carcieri said. It will be built by Warwick, R.I., company Cardi Corp., which is also building the Providence River Bridge, which carries Interstate 195.

Decorative features of the bridge have been preserved, however. LED lights — which according to renderings will be red, blue or green — will highlight the bridge’s piers in the river, and red lights will be attached vertically to light posts that line the center median. The new bridge will be 65 feet, the same height as the current span. The new bridge is expected to open in 2012.

The entire pile driving operation was controlled by the smart and sophisticated Remote Control Box ensuring the electrical and hydraulic movements to be seen by operator’s visual check.

Roll Over Cradles on the Barge for Hammer movement and Hammer Sitting

At the first stage, BRUCE SGH-4719 Hydraulic Hammer is being safely laid down on the 2.8 meter length of Roll Over Cradle anchored on deck of the barge to go to construction site.
To be continued, the head part of the hammer is laid down on the 2.2 meter of Roll Over Cradle.
