Model Selection Rule for U.S. Contractors
The BRUCE engineering selection rule: centrifugal force should be at least 15 times the pile weight. For example — a 7,700 lb (3.5-ton) Z-type sheet pile driven to 65 ft (20 m) in medium-dense sand requires a minimum centrifugal force of approximately 115,500 lbs (515 kN). The SGV-80 (114,600 lbs centrifugal force) is the baseline selection for this profile.
For large-diameter casing piles commonly used on U.S. Federal bridge contracts — such as the 72-inch (1,829 mm) casings on the Sakonnet River Bridge — the SGH-4719 impact hammer was the selection at 869 ft-ton (89.3 ton.m) maximum energy. The combined approach — vibratory hammer for initial penetration, hydraulic impact hammer for final set — is standard protocol on major U.S. bridge foundation projects.
Vibratory Hammer + Hydraulic Impact Hammer — The Combined U.S. Approach
On major U.S. Federal bridge and marine projects, vibratory hammers and hydraulic impact hammers are deployed in sequence. For Z-type and Larssen sheet piles common on U.S. cofferdam and coastal defense projects, the SGV-80 (114,600 lbs / 510 kN) through SGV-300 (460,000 lbs / 2,046 kN) cover most U.S. sheet pile weights and soil profiles. For medium-dense to dense soils — common in the U.S. Northeast glacial till regions — higher centrifugal force models are required.

The enclosed hydraulic circuit of the BRUCE SGV series significantly reduces the risk of oil contamination in sensitive marine environments compared to open diesel systems.
